Saturday, 5th December 2009 World Famous Wreck Specialist dives the Rhone

John Riley

John is a deep water wreck and marine engine specialist and an expert in shipwreck formation. He was the first person to successfully dive the SS Woniora, recoring the ship's bell. He led the team on the hazardous recovery of the iron passenger steamship Tasman, and the steam powered collier, Myola, sunk off the coast of Sydney ing 1919.

Known for his fascination for diving wrecks, John spend twelve days diving the Rhone every single day. From his knowledge of steamship wrecks and the wreck of the Rhone, We Be Divin' staff learnt many more interesting facts about the Rhone. Here is the email John sent after his adventure with us...

Dear Shirley. I would like to thank you for making my recent dive trip to the B.V.I. so enjoyable. The main reason for my visit was to dive the Rhone. A wreck I have long wanted to see. The Rhone is an Beautiful site and so accessible from the We Be Diving Dive Centre. Your staff were professional and sympathetic to every request I made and to dive the Rhone as much as possible. The twelve dives I did on the wreck gave me a good understanding of the site and has improved my understanding of  1860,s marine engineering and the wreck site formation process.  I also saw some beautiful fish life on the wreck. I will be writing up the notes and sketches I made of the Rhone in the near future and will send you a copy for your use. Fiona took some good photos and they are a great help.      Thank you,  Riley
